India has 86,360 postgraduate medical seats; Centre approves plan to add 5,000 more by 2028-29

The Centre has informed Parliament that India now has 86,360 postgraduate medical seats and plans to add 5,000 more by 2028-29 under a revamped infrastructure scheme. The expansion, backed by higher funding and updated regulatory norms, aims to strengthen specialist medical training, improve healthcare capacity and address the country’s growing demand for qualified doctors.
