More than 6,000 student-athletes from 41 universities across Australia have converged on Perth for UniSport Nationals 2026, running from 23 September to 3 October and spanning 30 different sports across venues throughout the city, including the Bendat Basketball Centre, Gold Netball Centre, Perth High Performance Centre and Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. The event marks Australia’s oldest and largest multi-sport university competition returning to WA for the first time since 2022.
For WA universities and the broader tertiary education sector, hosting an event of this scale offers a rare opportunity to showcase Perth’s sporting infrastructure and campus facilities directly to thousands of visiting students from interstate, many of whom may be encountering Western Australia for the first time.

Why WA Pursued the Event
Securing UniSport Nationals formed part of a deliberate two-event deal negotiated by the Cook Government through Tourism WA, which also locked in the event for 2030, giving WA certainty around hosting the competition on two separate occasions over the coming years. The 2022 edition of the event, the last time it was held in Perth, generated more than $10 million for the state’s economy while bringing almost 5,000 out-of-state visitors to WA, figures the 2026 edition is expected to meet or exceed given its larger scale.
Part of a Broader Events Strategy
The event forms part of the Cook Government’s broader economic diversification strategy, which has emphasised attracting a greater range of out-of-state visitation to WA through an always-on, year-round calendar of major, regional and mass-participation events. That strategy has already delivered other significant wins in 2026, including the AFC Women’s Asian Cup matches hosted at HBF Park and the World Squash Masters Championships, positioning Perth as an increasingly active player in Australia’s competitive events tourism market.
What It Means for WA Universities
WA’s own university students competing on home turf carry a natural advantage in terms of local support and familiarity with venues, though the true value of hosting extends well beyond any competitive edge, offering local students and staff a chance to volunteer, spectate and engage directly with a national event without needing to travel interstate themselves. Universities across WA have used the lead-up to the event to promote their own sporting programs and facilities, hoping to leave a lasting impression on the thousands of visiting students and staff attending.

With the competition running through early October, Perth’s sporting venues and CBD hospitality businesses are expecting a significant, if temporary, boost from the influx of student-athletes, coaches and supporters.
